Tour Overview:
Art Outdoors, in collaboration with Plein Air Down Under, present the 2026 Norfolk Island Art Adventure featuring LEON HOLMES.
Art Adventure of a lifetime! Join HOST ARTIST, LOUISE COLLIER, on an amazing trip to paradise - then add in INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED AWARD WINNING ARTIST, LEON HOLMES, and you have the art trip of a lifetime! Norfolk Island is the hidden gem of the South Pacific Ocean. Abundant with natural beauty, breathtaking scenery, and a unique and rich history… then there is the art - all the ingredients for an unforgettable experience. The colours, the history, and the amazing views around every turn will inspire you to interpret what you see and feel and capture the essence of this magnificent place in your art pieces (oils will be the medium being demonstrated by Leon this trip, although the use of other mediums are welcome - Leon and Louise are both experience across various mediums - please contact Louise to discuss).
Leon Holmes is a professional oil painter, international award-winning artist, lecturer and ambassador of Plein Air (Outdoor Painting). Every year Leon is invited to art events in Australia and around to globe to teach and demonstrate as well as showcase his art in solo/group exhibitions. Leon’s works are displayed in several international and national galleries, and now you can come on tour with him!
Louise has family living on the island and has visited several times. She hosted an art trip at Norfolk Island in 2025 and has had the chance to develop some local knowledge. She has partnered with the Norfolk Island Travel Centre to ensure you get the most from this fabulous art trip and to bring guest artist Leon Holmes to Norfolk Island. Louise has many years of experience teaching art and will be assisting Leon to help you achieve your best results (oil painting). You may choose to bring your own art materials or opt to have all the materials you need supplied for an extra cost.
Norfolk Island is a true getaway! Situated in the Pacific Ocean, a 2.5-hour flight from Sydney (1,676km northeast of Sydney). It is a volcanic outcrop, approximately 8km long and 5km wide. There are two uninhabited islands close by to the south (Nepean and Philip). The island has a fascinating history for you to discover and stunning scenery to enjoy and to paint; approximately one-third of the island is National Parks and Reserves. There are close to 2000 permanent residents living on the island, of which around 40% can trace their lineage back to the mutineers from the HMS Bounty and their Polynesian partners, and you may hear some of the locals speaking Norf’k such as “Watawieh yorlyi?” (Hello and how are you).
Day 1 (Friday 8 May 2026), in the morning, you’ll depart from Sydney International Airport to Norfolk Island (return flights ex Sydney included - enquire if you’d like flights from another state). Arriving at Norfolk Island early afternoon (note that Norfolk Island in August is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard time), enjoy the local scenes as you are transferred to your accommodation for the next 7 nights at the Ocean Breeze Cottages, a lovely elevated spot where you can enjoy comfortable accommodation with beautiful views towards Phillip Island. Your hire car (one per cottage) will be waiting for you at your cottage and will enable you to head off to the shops to stock up on some supplies for the week or maybe a drive to explore some of the island. At 5pm, we will gather in the function room at Ocean Breeze for welcome drinks and nibbles (supplied). Meet feature artist Leon Holmes and his wife Sara; host artist, Louise Collier, will run through the itinerary for the adventures to come before we head a short distance down the hill for a 2-course welcome dinner (included) at Bailey’s Restaurant at Governor’s Lodge Hotel.
Day 2 (Saturday 9 May), enjoy the Island Life Tour (with Aata Orn Tours - cost included). The tour leaves at 9am and will help you get your bearings, gain insight into life on the island, and enjoy some of Norfolk Island’s beautiful vistas. Morning tea is provided, as is lunch at the end of the tour at the Boatshed Restaurant (Governor’s Lodge Hotel). In the afternoon, we will gather for our first art workshop in the ‘studio’ (the function room at Ocean Breeze, which will be our indoor ‘studio’ for the week), where Leon will run through some preliminary skills sessions to prepare you for en plein air workshops later in the week. Louise will be on hand to assist and run through equipment set-up.
An exciting evening is planned with a Ghost Tour and dinner (included). Enjoy a delicious meal in a beautiful Georgian building, where you'll have the chance to mingle with other guests and get ready for a ghostly adventure. Once you have finished your meal, it's time to grab your lantern and prepare for a spooky walk. As you wander through the ruins, your guide will regale you with tales of ghostly apparitions, tragic events, and mysterious happenings, and you will hear about the island's dark history.
Day 3 (Sunday 10 May), if you are an early riser, you may like to join Louise for a gentle morning yoga flow and stretch. This morning (weather permitting), we head to our first ‘en plein air’ location for a full day painting workshop with Leon Holmes at one of the many beautiful locations on Norfolk Island (see possible locations list below). Morning tea is provided, and you can stop in town en route to pick up something to bring for lunch. Leon will start with a demo and teaching session first thing, then you will have the opportunity to paint en plein air. Both Leon and Louise will circulate giving individual tuition and advice as needed. After a break for lunch, continue to paint or take the opportunity to watch Leon in action, en plein air, as he paints and he will be happy to explain his process as he goes and answer any questions you have.
Late in the day, you may like to enjoy the sunset from one of our suggested spots (Emily Bay, Mt Pitt Lookout, Puppy’s Point, The Headstone Reserve, or Kingston Pier). Tonight, make your way to Bounty Bar and Grill for a 2-course dinner in this lovely old island home (cost included).
Day 4 (Monday 11 May), at 8.30am, the adventure continues as we meet at another beautiful en plein air location (weather permitting) for a half day workshop, led by Leon Holmes. Again, Leon will start with a demonstration and teaching session and then you will have time to paint. Leon and Louise will circulate giving individual tuition and advice as needed and there will be a break for morning tea (provided).
We will then enjoy lunch (included) at Hilli Restaurant and visit the fabulous Fletcher’s Mutiny Cyclorama installation (entry cost included), which brings to life the history of the Norfolk Island people and their connection with the infamous mutiny on the Bounty. An outstanding attraction, this stunning 360° panoramic painting with realistic 3D effects has been impressing visitors to Norfolk Island with its ‘WOW’ factor for over 18 years. The rest of the afternoon will be yours to enjoy at leisure.
At 5pm you can optionally enjoy a relaxing Yin Yoga and Meditation session with Louise. This evening, you are invited to meet in the common room for an Art Critque evening. This is a relaxed, informal gathering where you are encouraged to bring along any painting you’d like to be critiqued. Leon will share and provide constructive feedback, advice, insight and professional tips, creating a supportive environment to benefit everyone. BYO plate for a share dinner and enjoy an evening of friendly artistic feedback and connection.
Day 5 (Tuesday 12 May), we figure you may need some downtime by now! Enjoy some leisure time. Make use of your rental vehicle to explore some parts of the island you may not have visited yet. You might like to visit the shops in the Burnt Pine shopping area. Norfolk Island is a duty-free and GST-free shopping haven where you’ll find over 50 stores selling everything from sporting goods and imported shoes to cosmetics, jewellery, and artwork. You won’t find chain stores here. Norfolk Island’s shops are locally owned and operated. Or there may be a tour you’d like to add (this can be pre-booked before you leave home). A Natural Wonders Tour? Discover Norfolk Island's stunning geological wonders and natural beauty. Over the Cattlestops? Meet the skilled artisans and entrepreneurs behind the island's thriving businesses as they showcase their unique crafts and specialties. Museums? Option to purchase a 4-museum pass which will give you multiple entries to 4 museums at any time during your stay on the island and 2 guided Tag- A-Long tours. You won’t run out of things to do!
If you’re keen to keep painting, Louise will be in the ‘studio’ in the afternoon to guide you should you decide to do some more work on some of the artworks you have already created.
Around 4.45pm you will be picked up by coach transfer to join an Island Fish Fry ‘orn dar Cliff’ (cost included). For over 40 years, this incredible event has been serving up a feast of local dishes, salads, and homemade coconut bread, all topped off with mouth-watering fried fish that will leave you wanting more. But the food is just the beginning - the real magic happens as the sun sets over the stunning coastal scenery. After your feast, sit back and relax as the Baunti Byuutis dancing group takes the stage to entertain you with their captivating local performances. Standard drinks are available for purchase, or you are welcome to BYO.
Day 6 (Wednesday 13 May), this morning (weather permitting), we head to another stunning ‘en plein air’ location for a full day painting workshop with Leon. Morning tea and a delicious catered picnic lunch will be provided.
At 5pm you can optionally enjoy a relaxing Yin Yoga and Meditation session with Louise.
Sunset and the evening are at your leisure. You may like to enjoy the sunset from one of our suggested spots (Emily Bay, Mt Pitt Lookout, Puppy’s Point, The Headstone Reserve, or Kingston Pier). For dinner tonight (at your arrangement), you might like to try Salty Beer Garden, which has a great casual menu and relaxed atmosphere, or try one of the local clubs. Fancy something a little more formal? Make a reservation in advance at Hilli Restaurant or Bailey’s Restaurant.
Day 7 (Thursday 14 May), if you are an early riser, you may like to join Louise for a gentle morning yoga flow and stretch. This morning (weather permitting), we head of for our final ‘en plein air’ location (weather permitting) for a full day painting workshop with Leon.

The menu is designed around cooking over embers to intensify and develop the depth of flavour of the seasonal local produce, meat, and seafood found on Norfolk Island.

DAY 8 - Friday 15 May
Sadly, it is time for the tour to conclude. Pack your artworks to take home in your (large) suitcase and have wonderful memories of your Norfolk Island trip to treasure.
10.00am Check-out of accommodation. You will have a short time for any last-minute shopping before your transfer to the airport.
11.30am - Airport transfers - Ocean Breeze Cottages to Norfolk Island Airport.
2.20pm - Your flight, QF180, is scheduled to depart. Buy lunch at the airport or the cafe across the road.
4.10pm - Scheduled arrival at Sydney International Airport.
Love those Norfolk Pines!
What to bring:
ID for international departure - Norfolk Island is categorised as an external Australian Territory and whilst you will only need photographic ID to enter (ie a driver’s licence), a current passport is the preferred means of identification. Note that you will fly to Norfolk Island from the Sydney International terminal, and as such, you need to follow international protocol for liquids (no more than 100ml bottles/tubes in hand luggage etc). Duty-free is available – see here for details http://infrastructure.gov.au/territories-regions-cities/territories/norfolk-island/travel-information.
Large-sized suitcase big enough to fit the art materials. Note that the dimensions of the canvases and board are in inches – please ensure the dimensions of your suitcase will accommodate these. There are 6 supports (canvases and boards) that are in pairs to enable you to pack them face to face. We recommend that you bring baking paper to place between the faces of each pair to ensure your artworks are transported home safely. As well as your suitcase needing to accommodate your canvases and boards, remember you will need some extra room to bring your paints, brushes, and mediums home.
Sunscreen and hat.
Own water bottle to bring out to ‘en plein air’ painting locations.
Own ‘keep cup’ for tea/coffee when out at painting locations.
Personal belongings for a seven-night stay (ie clothes, bathroom bag, medications, shoes, etc).
Umbrella and raincoat in case of showers.
Yoga mat if you’d like to participate in yoga sessions (optional). A towel may suffice for yin yoga and meditation.
If you are opting to bring your own art supplies, please refer to the art supplies list for what to bring.
What to wear:
For art activities, you are provided with an apron for the trip (that is yours to keep) but also wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on - some pigments can be difficult to remove.
Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear suited to walking - note that August can be cool, so be sure to have some warm clothes and a raincoat. The average temperature in August is 19 degrees max and 15 degrees min - see here.
Bathers if you fancy braving the ocean! Bring your mask and snorkel if you like to explore under the water (there are a couple of nice snorkeling spots).
Appropriate for:
Adults only. All levels – Suitable for the complete beginner to the accomplished artist.
Changes to Itinerary:
We have carefully planned the Itinerary; however, there may be instances where the program description and staff presented in the description may change. Art Outdoors and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre reserve the right to make changes if they deem it necessary. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate the Norfolk Island Art Adventure as planned, but alterations may still occur after the final itinerary is sent.
Weather policy/contingency:
The Norfolk Island Art Adventure will proceed regardless of weather conditions. If the weather prevents us from painting ‘en plein air’ (outside) we will conduct the session in the function room at the Ocean Breeze Cottages and paint from reference material. Where appropriate if fine weather is forecast for a studio sessions it may be switched with and ‘en plein air’ session scheduled during inclement weather.
